Photographer Jo Daniell has been exhibiting since 1976. He has held solo exhibitions in Australia, Paris, London, and India. Thames & Hudson and Warner Books published his book Thornbird Country with an introduction by Colleen McCullough, in London and New York.
In this exhibition Vestiges - Australian Landscapes V1 he moves in a new direction with photographs of the Outback that explore its timelessness, looking at the landscape in a Pre-European way. His fascination with the marks that nature makes on the surface of the land, the memories of actions, form abstractions that give him a path toward comprehending and elucidating the fundamental characteristics of this unique environment
These works present an awareness of nature, of art, and the essence of landscape. They have a masterful consciousness of the visual abstraction, the motifs the vestiges that nature forms.
They allow the viewer to engage with abstract thought which goes beyond nature. Still points in a turning world; they encompass place, its spirit, the operation of time, and memory.
They hint at the concreteness which is behind all aesthetic experience, whilst appealing to the eye, the mind, and the senses.
